The New Orleans Opera Association has joined with RESULTS Tulane University to help promote TB awareness.
The music and the story of Verdi’s opera stir great sympathy for Violetta whose vulnerability makes her perhaps the most real of Verdi’s heroines. The issue of tuberculosis, the tragic illness which afflicts the ill-fated Violetta, is still an issue of grave concern today—killing one person ever 20 seconds worldwide. The New Orleans Opera Association has joined with RESULTS Tulane University, a grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to ending the worst aspects of poverty, to help raise awareness about TB among people who love opera.
“While tuberculosis may seem like a scourge of the past, currently one-third of the world’s population is infected with the TB bacterium. Despite the availability of effective treatment for as little as $20, TB is the cause of nearly two million deaths per year,” said Jamie Carpenter, group leader for RESULTS Tulane. “RESULTS applauds the New Orleans Opera taking this opportunity to educate the public about this often overlooked disease.”
